Mixed media art for beginners…

Mixed media art is one of my favourite forms of art. It’s an exciting way to push creative boundaries by blending different textures, colours, and materials to create one artwork. For instance, Watercolours with ink or pen, or charcoal with soft pastels.

Here are some of my favorite materials to use:
Wet and dry:
I often use this mix in my art: watercolours for the base, then fineliner or ink pen for details. Mixing drawing with painting is a common technique used by artist. Recently, I’ve been using oil pastels and water. Another example is charcoal mixed with oil paint.
Collage: Collages are a lot of fun. Begin with your chosen base, like a blank canvas, a piece of flat wood, paper, cardboard, or stone. Then glue your materials like ink, fabric, paper, or photos to the base of your artwork. You could then, carefully draw or paint over it to add your own unique touches and bring the artwork to life.

This video is perfect for beginners and teaches easy collage techniques.

Layering Techniques
Watercolour base:
With some diluted paint create a wash or an abstract shape. Leave it to dry before proceeding to the next step.
Ink or pen: Use a fineler pen or a brush with some drawing ink to add details, texture or write text.
Collage elements: Tear up some paper into shapes then arrange and glue them down using a medium that won’t smudge your ink work.
Finial touches: Add any extra details with a pen, pencil or pastel to highlights any key features.
